Ford Motor Company and Domino’s Pizza are teaming up to offer industry-first self driving vehicles to be used for pizza delivery. Although Ford does not plan to begin production of self-driving vehicles until 2021 testing is currently being conducted to learn how customers interact with self-driving vehicles as delivery devices.
Researchers from Ford and Domino’s are interested in learning how self-driving delivery vehicles will be received by the public. Over the next few weeks randomly-selected Domino’s customers in Ann Arbor, Michigan will have the opportunity to receive their delivery orders from a Ford Fusion Autonomous Research vehicle. The vehicle will be manually driven by a Ford safety engineer and staffed by researchers. This is the first step in an ongoing process to learn how best to use self-driving vehicles for delivery purposes.
“As we increase our understanding of the business opportunity for self-driving vehicles to support the movement of people and goods, we’re pleased to have Domino’s join us in this important part of the development process,” said Sherif Marakby, Ford vice president, Autonomous and Electric Vehicles. “As a company focused on the customer experience, Domino’s shares our vision for a future enabled by smart vehicles in a smart environment that enhance people’s lives.”.
