If you drive a non-modem equipped 2010 – 2017 Ford vehicle you will soon be able to upgrade your connectivity to include 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, smartphone control of existing key fob features, vehicle health and security alerts, and vehicle location tracking. The new FordPass SmartLink device simply plugs into the OBD II port below the steering wheel and enables an array of new connectivity features currently available only on newer Ford models equipped with modems.
Ford is making every effort to ensure that more of their cars, vans, SUVs and trucks offer all of the connectivity features consumers have come to expect. By 2019, 100 percent of Ford’s new U.S. vehicles will be built with connectivity. In the meantime FordPass SmartLink will fill the gap for owners of recent model Fords.
FordPass SmartLink systems will be available exclusively through Ford dealerships starting this summer. It will be available for only $16.99 per month, plus installation, for 24 months. Customers will receive telematics services that enable remote key fob and other convenient features. FordPass SmartLink customers will also receive a complimentary trial of a Verizon 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot with 1 gigabyte or 30 days of data – whichever comes first.
“Vehicle connectivity has improved at a rapid rate in recent years,” said Frederiek Toney, president, Global, Ford Customer Service Division. “We believe offering an affordable way for our customers to upgrade their older-model vehicles to include more modern technology will improve their ownership experience for years to come.”
