Ford Explorer vs Pilot: Performance and Capability

2019 Ford ExplorerDelivering dynamic performance when you need it most, the 2019 Explorer offers drivers three distinct engine options to match their individual style. The base Explorer trim comes with either an efficient 2.3L EcoBoost® 4-cylinder or heftier 3.5L V6 engine that can produce up to 290 horsepower. Higher trims supply even more rev thanks to a 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 that tops out at 365 horsepower with 350 lb-ft of torque.

Meanwhile, the Pilot provides its own V6 engine capable of reaching 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. Just like the Explorer, the Pilot also comes standard with a 6-speed automatic transmission with an available all-wheel-drive system.  When properly configured, the Pilot can haul up to 3,500 pounds, compared to the Explorer’s remarkable 5,000-pound max towing capacity.

Interior Space and Tech

Whether taking off on a solo adventure or loading up the family for the big weekend barbeque, both SUVs deliver an exceptional amount of room inside their spacious cabins. Head- and legroom are almost equally abundant though the Pilot’s cargo space behind the third row does get a bit cramped, offering only 16.5 cubic feet compared to the Explorer’s 21 cubic feet.

2019 Ford Explorer TechnologyEnjoy having complete access to all your favorite music, navigation, news, and online services from Ford’s long-list of advanced features including:

  • SYNC® 3 voice-activated infotainment display
  • Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ capability
  • Voice-activated navigation system

Likewise, the Honda Pilot offers its own suite of standard and available technologies like: a multifunctional steering wheel-mounted controls, Bluetooth® streaming audio, HD Radio™, and and available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™.

Active Safety

No matter where the road leads, each model places your safety at the top of their lists. Thanks to the Ford Safe and Smart™ package, you can drive with confidence knowing you’re protected by a full-suite of tech including: Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, rearview monitor, and more!

The Pilot also takes great steps to help keep you out of harm’s way with help from its Honda Sensing® system that includes features like LED Daytime Running Lights to a Lane Departure Warning system.

Ford Explorer vs Honda Pilot: Which SUV Takes the Top Spot?

Delivering class-leading performance and cutting-edge technology, the 2019 Explorer easily beats the Pilot in almost every category.
